„It is certain that collecting is a passion and a love affair. A passion in the finest sense of the word in the pursuance of possession, and a love affair exploring every nuance of communion between the self and a work of art. “
Dr. Lóránd Bereczky Director, Hungarian National Gallery
„No, there is no sense to think over what I should have done in a different way. I believe in fate and that nothing is accidental in life. But I do believe that we are able to influence fate with our attitude”.”
Árpád Polgár
„What is reality? We do not know. What is realism then?… We see not two alike. It is certain that reality is made up of two, the world in front of us and the human who is able to perceive it.” István Csók
„Higher life starts from the moment one lives only for others as it dilates, lives in crowds, becomes part of a cosmic life and do not have to care of his own future on earth. He acquiesces in everything but fulfils his duty till the very last.” László Mednyánszky
„ There is solely one thing that counts in art above all: quality.”
István Szőnyi
Polgár Gallery and Auction House gave token of its commitment towards art by organizing an unaided exhibition from 4th to 25th June 1999 and publishing an album of high level „Szőnyi in Private Collections”. To give an illustration of an extremely ample oeuvre for the widest public, a book of colour reproductions of the exhibited paintings was privately published as the co-edition of Mária Egri, art historian and Árpád Polgár, collector and antique dealer. The album is the continuation of the previously launched successful and appreciated series, displaying representative collections of János Vaszary and Ödön Márffy, this time it focuses on the realm of Szőnyi.
„There have been three editions so far trying to give a view of the art of Márffy, but none of them has ever dealt with his art in such approach, gathering and demonstrating his painting from private collections” - Mimi Kratochwill, Art Historian
„Now I know that my dawdling, my irresistible inner attraction towards the simple and romantic nook of nature has been nothing else but my life-long union with my optimistic belief that has given me sunshine, color and freedom.”
Quoted from the Diary of János Vaszary
